The universe is a dark place until light is applied to it. This is as true on a bright and cloudless day as it is on a dark moonless night. Shadows are never “on” the ground, it is actually quite the opposite. This truth is probably most apparent in the urban landscape at night, where that dance of light and color illuminates surfaces that then fade back into black, then light up again in new and different ways. Painting the night is a theme I return to again and again. I will never cease to be amazed at the experience.
