Conceived as a series of “black on black” paintings, I made a box to place dark objects into, painted it entirely black, and then painted them from observation. These relate directly to my nocturnal landscapes, and force me to see the darkest darks as colors, not merely value. While it’s not always apparent, very little black paint was used, and never straight out of the tube. All the blacks in my paintings are actually very dark colors made from pure color.
